Carros de Galicia
Federico Mompou

Carros de Galicia (Carts of Galicia) is an evocative piece by Federico Mompou, originally composed for piano and later adapted for cello and piano by Ana Marco, pianist of Sabina Duo. This work captures the spirit and traditions of Galicia, a region in northern Spain, through its tender melody.

Inspired by the rural landscapes and the slow, rhythmic movement of carts in Galicia, the piece reflects a sense of nostalgia and connection to the land. The melody develops with simplicity, evoking the tranquilness of Galician life while honoring its cultural roots.

Mompou’s minimalist and introspective style shines in Carros de Galicia, where every note carries emotional weight. In this arrangement for cello and piano, the dialogue between the two instruments raises the piece’s lyrical and expressive qualities. The cello brings a warm, singing voice to the melody, while the piano provides a delicate and grounded accompaniment, to take over the melody towards the end of the piece.

This piece is a celebration of Galician culture and identity. The slow, deliberate pace of the composition shows the rhythms of rural life, making it a unique experience for performers and audiences alike.

In this cello and piano arrangement, Carros de Galicia the cello brings a new color to the piece. Its sound conveys the melancholy of the melody, while the piano adds subtle textures that evoke the creaking of the carts and the wide Galician landscapes.
