Lessons

I started giving cello lessons to private students in Spain a year before coming to the Netherlands to study. Since that moment I was very excited with the idea of giving others the knowledge that my teachers gave me in the past. This job provided me with a profound sense of fulfillment, as I felt I was making a meaningful and positive impact on my students’ development while cultivating their passion for learning and music.

In July 2024 I finished my Master’s in cello performance at ArtEZ and since then I have done two substitute teaching positions as a cello teacher at Quintus Kampen and at Blink kunstcollectief. I then realized that the music education system in the Netherlands is very different from the one in Spain. While the Dutch approach tends to prioritize versatility, creativity and independent thinking, the Spanish system tends to be more traditional, with a structured progression through conservatories.

I believe we can take the best from both systems. Our present is changing at a rapid pace, and that’s why I support the emphasis the Dutch system places on encouraging creativity and innovation. We must broaden our horizons to stay up to date. I also believe it’s positive to incorporate more music theory into instrument lessons, as this is something I see as beneficial in the Spanish system, but always in a more engaging and less rigid way. I believe it's important for students to understand what they are playing: the importance of harmony, rhythm, intonation, etc., adapting it to all levels, of course.
