Rogelio Huguet i Tagell (1882-1956), was a Catalan composer who lived and worked in Paris for most of his life, country where he produced his work. A musician who was highly recognized in his time, although today he is not mentioned in major reference works, and few perform his music. Moreover, Spanish musicology does not highlight him, as he left his homeland.
The trio we have chosen, Scènes Andalouses, has never been performed before; there is no recorded version of the work, nor any evidence that it has been included in a concert program. Premiering this work by Huguet in the Netherlands seems to us a significant tribute, following the footsteps of Turina, who presented his Trio No. 2 here.
That’s why we have chosen the title ESTRENARTE for this proposal. In Spanish, “estrenar” means “premiere,” and the word that follows, “arte,” translates to “art” in English. We want to give the audience the opportunity to hear these works, as we are aware that culture, by definition, is selection; that every history of artistic production is accompanied by destruction, since not all works survive the test of time. If culture did not filter, it would remind us of Borges’ character “Funes the Memorious”, who is able to remember everything. But the question is, who or what decides to preserve or not to preserve? The criteria should be artistic and not of any other kind. This is precisely what we advocate with this proposal: the possibility of bringing their works to life, rescuing them to be performed again, allowing them to age with the musicians without ever dying.
